Notre Dame Law School’s Program on Church, State & Society will award several summer fellowships — in the amount of $8,000 to $10,000 each — to students working for a religious institution in a legal capacity for the summer of 2019.
This is an outstanding opportunity for students to experience a variety of career options that combine law and religion, and involve legal services to religious institutions of all types.
Past placements have included: the Office of Legal Services at Presence Health, the General Counsel’s office at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C., the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office of Legal Services, Catholic Charities Legal Assistance in Chicago, Catholic University of America’s Office of General Counsel in Washington, D.C., and the American Indian Catholic Schools Network.
Student are encouraged to create their own fellowships, and placements are not limited to Catholic institutions. For example, students can intern in the religious-institutions practices at several private law firms across the country, such as Telios Law and Wagenmaker and Oberly, or at a religious charity, educational institution, social-welfare agency, health-care provider, etc., that is consistent with the goals for the fellowships.

The fellowship is intended primarily for first-year law students, but second-year students may apply as well. Interested students should submit a cover letter, describing their interest and relevant experience and background, a current resume, and a description of their proposed placement, to Professor Richard Garnett by February 1.
