Notre Dame Law School’s Program on Church, State & Society is pleased to welcome Judge Amul Thapar as a guest lecturer the week of October 26th. Judge Thapar will teach alongside Program Faculty Director and Paul J. Schierl/Fort Howard Corporation Professor of Law, Richard Garnett, in a Freedom of Religion seminar course offered to a select number of Notre Dame law students. Judge Thapar will also meet in small groups throughout the week with first year law students affiliated with the Program on Church, State & Society.
As a guest lecturer, Thapar’s expertise and knowledge will add tremendous value to the final week of this seminar course. Judge Thapar is a United States Sixth Circuit Judge, who has the privilege of being the first South Asian Article III judge. President George W. Bush nominated him to the district court on May 24, 2007, and President Donald J. Trump nominated him to the Sixth Circuit on March 21, 2017. "It's a great honor for Notre Dame Law School, and a special opportunity for our Freedom of Religion students, to host Judge Thapar as a co-instructor. He's given careful thought to freedom of religion's content, foundation, and limits and his insights will help us understand the Supreme Court's recent and forthcoming First Amendment decisions,” said Garnett.
The Freedom of Religion seminar course is not open to the public. Due to university and local COVID-19 guidelines, Judge Thapar will not be delivering a public lecture during his visit.
